A Wonderful Life

Peter Kosminsky's White Oleander is a film rich of psychological disorders found in society. The life of a young girl, Astrid, is followed over the course of several years, and the audience is witness to the horrors and maladies she must endure.

Narcissism

Although Narcissim is not dirrectly adressed in the film, it is evident that Astrid's mother, Ingrid, suffers from this Psychological Dissorder. The psychological deffinition of Narcissism is...

- extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.

Laura King's psychological text The Science of Psychology states: "Narcissistic poeple often have an unrealistic sense of self-importance, cannot take criticism, manipulate poeple, and lack empath. These characteristics lead to substantial problems in relationships."(pg 556)

Watch the first 2:45 of this clip and you will see a portion of self-centered and domineering person Ingrid is.

Parenting styles play a huge role in this film, because it is through parenting which children are most greatly influenced. Ingrid is a very selfish and selfocused individual, caring much more about her own affairs then the life of her child. An Indulgent parenting style is more then visual in this scenero.

Indulgent Parenting

This is a parenting style where the parents are involved with the child's life, but place few restrictions on the child. This can result in poor social competence and failure to learn respect. Often these children have difficulty in controling thier emotions (Baumrind, 1991, p. 62). It is important to understand that these parents do care about the child, but in Ingrid's care simply care more about themselves.

This is very evident in several scenes, probably most so when Ingrid drives to her boyfriend's house with Astrid. Not just a simple say hi and leave event, but Astrid gets left in the car while her mom has sex with her boy friend. Evidence of depression seems to be evident in Astrid as she sits in the car by herself, being aware of her mother's actions do not help the situtation. I believe it is safe to say that at this point you could make claim that Ingrid is failing to show any type of parenting style. Treating Astrid much more as a friend, then how she should be a daughter.

I believe that a combination of the Indulgent Parenting, and Ingrid's Narcissism made for dangerous combination when raising a child. Despite Astrid's tramatic childhood, by the end of the movie she seemed to be atleast fairly Psychology stable; which serves as evidence to the strength of the human mind, and the potential levels of stress we may be able to experience.
